Most founders come to us asking for a logo. What they actually want is for customers to remember them, trust them and pick them over a competitor. A logo helps — but on its own it does surprisingly little. Here’s what a brand really is, and how to build one that works as hard as you do.
Think of your logo as a signature at the bottom of a letter. It confirms who the message is from — but nobody falls in love with a signature. People respond to the letter itself: what you say, how you say it, and how you make them feel.
That’s why two businesses with equally beautiful logos can perform completely differently. One has a clear story, consistent visuals and a tone customers recognise. The other has a nice mark sitting on a confusing website, mismatched social posts and a sales pitch that changes every week.
When we build a brand identity at TKV, the logo is usually the fourth or fifth thing we design — not the first. These are the pieces that matter:
Research from brand consultancies consistently shows that presenting a brand consistently across channels can lift revenue significantly. The reason is simple: recognition builds trust, and trust shortens the decision to buy.
Every time a customer sees the same colours, the same tone of voice and the same quality of design, you make a small deposit in their memory. Change things randomly and you’re starting from zero again. A great brand isn’t one brilliant poster — it’s a thousand small, consistent moments.
If any of these feel familiar, a logo refresh alone won’t fix the problem:
Our process starts with a discovery session — usually two hours — where we dig into your customers, competitors and ambitions. From there we write a short positioning statement and a personality profile before any design begins.
Next we explore two or three distinct visual directions, each presented with real examples: a homepage, a social post, a business card. You pick a route, we refine it across the full system, and finish with guidelines and ready-to-use templates. A typical brand identity project takes three to five weeks.
Before you brief any designer, try writing down answers to three questions: Who exactly is your ideal customer? What do they get from you that they can’t get elsewhere? How should they feel after dealing with you? If you can answer these clearly, your brand — and your logo — will be far stronger for it.
The most expensive mistake is designing before deciding. When a business skips positioning, every design review turns into a debate about personal taste, and the final result pleases the committee rather than customers.
Other frequent pitfalls include copying a competitor’s look, using too many colours and fonts, changing the logo every year, and launching a new identity on the website while old brochures, signage and social templates stay in use. Customers notice the mismatch, and trust quietly drops.
