How we turn a messy brief into a brand people remember

Our discovery process step by step — and the questions we ask every founder before we design anything.

Very few briefs arrive neatly packaged. Most come as a mix of voice notes, competitor screenshots, half-finished decks and a feeling that “something isn’t working”. That’s completely normal. Here’s exactly how we turn that mess into a clear, confident brand.

01Step 1: Listen before we sketch

Every project begins with a discovery workshop. We meet the founder and key team members for around two hours and ask a lot of questions — about customers, competitors, ambitions, frustrations and what success looks like in two years.

We also speak to two or three real customers when possible. Their words are often more honest and useful than anything in a brief.

02Step 2: Find the real problem

The stated problem is often not the real one. A client might ask for a new logo when the actual issue is that customers don’t understand the difference between their three services. Another might want a website redesign when their pricing page is the only thing causing drop-offs.

We summarise our findings in a short insight report: what’s working, what’s confusing and the single biggest opportunity.

03Step 3: Write the strategy on one page

Before designing anything, we agree a one-page brand strategy with you. It includes:

01Who the brand is for — a clear description of the ideal customer.
02The promise — what they get from you that matters most.
03Proof — reasons they should believe it.
04Personality — three or four words that guide tone and design.
05Competitive position — how you’re different from the main alternatives.

04Step 4: Explore distinct directions

With strategy agreed, we create two or three visual directions. Each is genuinely different — not three versions of the same idea — and shown in context on a homepage, social post, packaging or signage.

Seeing a brand applied makes decisions much easier than judging a logo on a white page. You choose a direction, and often combine strengths from more than one.

05Step 5: Build the system

We refine the chosen route into a complete identity: logo suite, colour palette, typography, imagery style, icons, patterns and layout rules. Then we design the most important touchpoints — website, social templates, stationery, presentations — so you can launch immediately.

06Step 6: Hand over everything

Finally, we deliver a practical brand guide and all source files. You own everything outright. We also run a short handover session with your team so the brand is applied consistently long after the project ends.

07The questions we ask every founder

If you’re preparing for a branding project, think about these in advance:

01Why did you start the business, and what still excites you about it?
02Who is your best customer, and why do they choose you?
03What do customers misunderstand about you?
04Which competitors do you admire, and which do you want to avoid looking like?
05If the brand were a person, how would they speak and behave?
06What would make this project a success one year from now?

08What clients receive at the end

A finished brand project should leave you fully equipped, not dependent on us for every small design. Our standard delivery includes the logo suite in every file format, colour and typography specifications, an imagery and icon style, social media and presentation templates, stationery designs and a concise brand guide that your team will actually read.

We also schedule a check-in a few weeks after launch to answer questions and review how the brand is being applied in the real world.

09How we keep projects on track

Branding projects can drift when feedback is unclear or too many people are involved. To prevent that, we agree a timeline with fixed review dates at the start, name one decision-maker on your side, and present every round of work with a short explanation linking design choices back to the agreed strategy.

Feedback is collected in one shared document rather than scattered across emails and messages, so nothing is lost. If something new comes up mid-project — a new product line or a change in direction — we discuss the impact on scope and timing openly before continuing. This structure keeps the process calm, quick and focused on the outcome rather than endless revisions.

It also means your team always knows what is happening next, what is needed from them and when the finished brand will be ready to launch.

10Frequently asked questions

Q01
How long does a branding project take? Most identity projects take three to five weeks from discovery to final handover.
Q02
How involved do I need to be?Plan for the discovery workshop, two or three review meetings and quick feedback between them — usually a few hours per week.
Q03
What if none of the directions feel right? We revisit the strategy together and refine. Because every direction is grounded in agreed strategy, this is rare.
