Product photos that sell: a practical studio checklist

Lighting, angles, styling and editing tips that turn product photos into sales — for eCommerce, marketplaces and social media.

Online, your photos do the job of a salesperson. Customers can’t touch or try your product, so images decide whether they trust it enough to buy. Here’s the checklist we use on every product shoot.

01Plan the shot list before the shoot

Great product photography starts with planning. For each product, decide which images you need and where they’ll be used — website, Amazon, Flipkart, Instagram or ads. Each platform has different size and background requirements.

A standard eCommerce set usually includes a clean front shot on white, two or three angles, a close-up of texture or details, a scale shot showing size, and one or two lifestyle images in use.

02Lighting makes or breaks the image

Soft, even lighting shows products accurately and flatters every surface. We use large diffused light sources to avoid harsh shadows, and reflectors to fill dark areas. For shiny products like jewellery, glass or electronics, careful light placement controls reflections.

If you’re shooting yourself, a large window with indirect daylight and a white foam board on the opposite side can produce surprisingly professional results.

03Consistency builds a professional store

When every product on your website is shot with the same background, angle, lighting and framing, your store instantly looks more premium and trustworthy. Inconsistent photos make even great products look cheap.

Create a simple photo style guide: background colour, camera height, product size in frame, shadow style and editing look. Use it for every new product you add.

04Lifestyle images create desire

White-background shots inform; lifestyle shots sell. Showing a product being used — a bag on a shoulder, coffee in a hand, a lamp in a styled room — helps customers imagine owning it.

Keep props minimal and on-brand so the product remains the hero. Choose settings that match your target customer’s life and aspirations.

05The editing checklist

Every image we deliver goes through these steps:

01Accurate colour correction so products match reality and returns drop.
02Background cleanup or replacement for marketplace compliance.
03Dust, scratch and blemish removal.
04Consistent cropping, alignment and margins across the range.
05Export in the right sizes and formats — WebP for web, high-resolution JPEG for marketplaces and print.
06SEO-friendly file names and alt text that describe the product.

Background cleanup25%

06Don’t forget the details customers ask about

Look at your reviews and customer questions. If people often ask about size, material, stitching or what’s in the box, answer it with a photo. Every question a picture answers removes a reason not to buy.

07Marketplace requirements at a glance

Each marketplace has its own rules, and listings that break them can be suppressed. Amazon and Flipkart main images generally require a pure white background with the product filling most of the frame, no added text or watermarks, and a minimum resolution so customers can zoom.

Secondary images give you more freedom for lifestyle shots, size comparisons, infographics and feature callouts. Always check the latest guidelines for your category before a shoot so every image is usable on day one.

08Planning a shoot day efficiently

A well-organised shoot day saves money and produces more consistent results. Before the day, prepare every product — cleaned, steamed, labelled and grouped by colour or size. Share the shot list, reference images and required formats with the photographer, and agree on how many final images each product needs.

On the day, shoot all similar products under the same lighting setup before changing anything, then move on to lifestyle scenes. Review images on a large screen as you go so problems are caught immediately rather than discovered during editing. Afterwards, name and organise files by product code and channel so your team can upload them quickly and accurately.

09Using photos beyond the product page

The same shoot can power your entire marketing calendar. Use lifestyle images for social posts and ads, close-ups for email campaigns, and consistent white-background shots for catalogues and wholesale presentations. Planning for these uses up front means you get far more value from every hour in the studio.

10Final thoughts

Finally, keep a master library of every approved image with clear file names, product codes and usage notes. When a new marketplace, catalogue or campaign comes along, your team can find the right picture in minutes instead of reshooting. Over time this library becomes one of your most valuable marketing assets, and it ensures every channel shows your products at their very best.

11Frequently asked questions

Q01
How many photos should each product have?Six to eight images covering angles, details, scale and use is a strong standard for eCommerce.
Q02
Is smartphone photography good enough? For social posts it can be. For main listing images, professional lighting and editing usually lift conversion and reduce returns.
Q03
How much does product photography cost?Pricing usually depends on the number of products and images; studio white-background shots cost less per image than styled lifestyle scenes.
